Tasso, Torquato

Tasso, Torquato
(1544-1595)
Italian poet, writer, and theorist, active in Ferrara. Tasso was born in Sorrento and educated in law and philosophy at the universities of Padua and Bologna. Soon thereafter, he entered in the service of Cardinal Luigi d'Este and later Luigi's brother Duke Alfonso II. While in their service, Tasso wrote the Aminta (published in 1573), one of the greatest examples of Renaissance pastoral drama, and the Gerusalemme liberata (published in 1581), an epic romance that celebrates the d'Este family's ancestry. Tasso suffered from mental illness, which caused his imprisonment in 1577 after a violent outburst in front of Lucrezia d'Este and a stay in the Hospital of Santa Anna from 1579 to 1586. Upon his release, he moved to Mantua where he enjoyed the protection of Duke Vincenzo Gonzaga. He spent the last years of his life moving from city to city. He died in Rome in the Monastery of San Onofrio.
